MRC Roofing is a certified installer of Permalock metal shingles. Aluminum shingles were first installed in Hawaii in the 1960s and about half of those roofs are still in service. That’s a great testament to the longevity of aluminum shingles. When installed properly, aluminum shingles will last their full 50-year warranted lifespan and more.

The nice thing about metal shingles is that they can be installed right over an existing single layer of low profile wood or asphalt shingles. This technique saves on demo costs and does not affect the transferable, non-prorated warranty.

All aluminum shingles in the United States are made up of about 95 percent recycled aluminum, which automatically qualifies it as a green product. It loses none of its physical properties during the recycling process. Aluminum is the third most abundant element on Earth, which makes aluminum a sustainable resource for the building and manufacturing industries not only because of aluminum’s nearly inexhaustible reserves but also combined with endless recycling abilities.

Aluminum shingles cost around $10 per square foot, which makes it comparable to normal/traditional flooring installation costs. Initially aluminum shingles cost more than asphalt shingles and less than cedar shakes but aluminum shingles have a longer expected lifespan than both. Copper or zinc shingles have a 75-year life expectancy. This means that in the long run, the life cycle cost of metal shingles makes them the more cost effective option, due to less reroofing.

Metal shingles have a class-A fire rating. This can lower the cost of home insurance, which also lowers the overall life cycle cost of a metal shingle installation. You only have to reroof once in 60 years and at the same time lower your monthly insurance premiums with an aluminum shingle installation. You are basically only paying $5 or $6 per square foot when compared to asphalt shingles that would need to be reroofed twice in 60 years.

The color coating on Permalock aluminum shingles is a high quality Kynar 5000 ceramic finish which is fade resistant and warranted not to chip, peel, flake or blister throughout the lifetime of the shingle.
