When Shirley Pai Hilton of Kahala Pacific Floors first started working in the wood flooring business a number of years ago, it was a totally foreign world to her. Having come from a finance and high-tech career, you can imagine what a change it was to start dealing with wood, stone and carpet. Further, she found that there is a huge amount of information that needs to be sifted through if one is to make a reasonably informed buying decision.
From that time forward, Hilton made it her goal to gain as much technical and practical knowledge about flooring so that she can be of the best possible service to her customers. She has become quite an expert in the field and has even been asked to render professional opinions and contribute to written publications. She also regularly trains her staff so that they can be knowledgeable when working with customers, too.
But what she enjoys most of all is talking to her customers, learning what their needs and wants are, and helping them to sort out the many choices. “I hate it when retailers put selfish interests first. Of course I want to sell a floor — that’s what I’m in business for. But it has to be what is right for the customer, not just what I have in stock. And it has to be a good value and installed correctly,” said Hilton.
Hilton and her staff can literally spend hours with a particular customer, educating them on the different types of wood and stone flooring. That gave them the thought: why not put it into a seminar format where we can share our information with many at once and we can also learn from one another. “People just love the seminars, if I do say so myself,” Hilton laughed.
Their 2019 Holiday session of Great Flooring 101 will be held at their showroom on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The program will start with very basic information on the various types of wood, vinyl, bamboo, laminate, stone and tile flooring on the market. You will learn the pros and cons of each type and also learn installation information from a licensed professional. It ends with a Q&A session and private consultations.
