Additions to a 1970s Waialae Iki home have expanded living space by approximately 1,800 square feet and opened up new views. The additions designed and built by Homeworks Construction were focused on the rear of the home overlooking the valley and mountains.

“We demolished the old deck and lanai of the existing two story single family home and built a new 133 square foot upper level dining area,” said Homeworks president and chief of operations Sylvio Boucher. “On the ground level, adjacent to the new swimming pool, we constructed a new deck and 414 square foot recreation room with wet bar and full bath.”

Boucher said the creative new design plan was developed by collaboration between the owners and Homeworks designers and builders and involved multiple sets of stairs to provide access from the pool level to the first and second floor of the main residence.

The original 4,000-square-foot home, now expanded to 6,000 total square feet, occupies an 11,000-square-foot lot in the fourth increment of Waialae Iki. The 40-degree slope of the lot and minimal space to access the project area in the back of the property required that all work be done by hand, including moving all the necessary materials for the foundation, framing, finishes, and pool deck.

“All materials were carefully chosen both for durability and to complement the existing structure,” Boucher said. “The deck and railing post are constructed with Trex, which is both attractive and weather and water resistant, and the railing is stainless steel cable. The front of the house and pool deck are on waterproof solid tile.

“This project was a big challenge and required intensive coordination between all suppliers, sub-contractor and workers,” he added.

Homeworks Construction president and chief administrative officer Marshall Hick-ox noted that Homeworks has been the contractor of choice for numerous new homes, additions, and major remodeling in the Waialae Iki neighborhood over the years. “In the early years, over 20 years ago, we set ourselves apart from other firms by finding solutions to challenging jobs. It could have been a steep lot or difficult addition. Our goal is always to find both the best and most economical solution to solve the problem and get the job done.”
