Dr. R. David Dikeman decided to take a methodic approach to solving his home heat problem. The scientist and Hawaii Kai homeowner frequently was cut off from trade winds. Vaulted ceilings trapped heat so that even on hot days it always was hotter inside than out. “I knew there was something I could install to suck the heat out of my house. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. it was almost un-inhabitable,” Dikeman said. “I was researching solutions when I came upon Island Cooling’s web site. The QuietCool whole house fan and E-shield radiant barrier was what I was looking for.”

Installed in the attic of the home, the QuietCool system works by drawing heat out of the living space and blowing trapped hot air out of the attic vents, bringing in fresh air from outside. Controlled by a switch on the wall, it uses a fraction of the energy of A/C.

Dikeman purchased his QuietCool STL4.8 and E-shield barrier before the summer heat hit and has been enjoying it ever since. “It’s changed the quality of my family’s life,” Dikeman said. “The system has made it so we are shielded from the heat pressure and get a cooling breeze through the house. Plus, we already are seeing a savings on our electricity bill.”

This system is one of more than 4,300 that have been distributed statewide by Island Cooling LLC. With its single-minded emphasis on energy-efficient cooling, brothers and certified NAHB Green Professionals Ivan and Al Whitworth of Island Cooling help many homeowners who thought that their only choices were between being hot and running full time air conditioning. “At the end of the day, the QuietCool system matches our island lifestyle,” said Ivan.

Richard Montano also is happy with his decision. His Kunia home had a system installed and he started feeling the benefits right away. “As soon as we started using it we saw our HECO bill drop dramatically,” Montano wrote in a review. “The service is top notch, Island Cooling is great, personable and really cares about their customers.”
