One of the most efficient but often overlooked ways of reducing energy consumption in the home or workplace is installation of a “cool roof.”
What makes a roof “cool?” Tropical Roofing and Raingutters president Charles Beeck explained that various types of roofing material on the market today have been Energy Star rated, such as Solaris shingles from Certainteed, meaning they reflect heat from the sun away from the house or commercial building, instead of absorbing it.
“When the heat is absorbed by the roof, it’s transferred to the interior,” Beeck said. “It makes sense that if you can reduce the heat in your house by installing a cool roof, you can cut down on air conditioning and save both energy and dollars. If you don’t have air conditioning, you will still enjoy a cooler home or workplace.”
The types of roofs that qualify as cool according to the Energy Star rating system are metal standing seam, aluminum standing seam, elastomeric coatings, and single-ply roofing systems. These roofing products are available in a variety of colors and suitable for residential and commercial applications, both new construction and remodeling. The most popular are fiberglass shingles, which can lower the temperature 10 to 12 degrees inside the house.
Charles Beeck is a Building Industry Association “Remodeler of the Year” and was a two-term president of the Hawaii Roofing Contractors Association. Winner of two Honolulu Star-Advertiser “Hawaii’s Best” First Place Awards, Tropical Roofing and Raingutters has been serving Hawaii with quality products and workmanship for nearly two decades and is a leader in the installation of “cool roofing.”
Tropical is currently offering a $1,000 discount, plus a free solar attic fan, with the installation of a new roof. For more information or to make an appointment to meet with a Tropical roofing specialist for a free roof inspection, please call 847-0030.
