When walk-in bathtubs were introduced in Hawaii more than a decade ago by Tropical Plumbing & Bath, styles and accessories were limited.

Previously, the market was almost exclusively homes with members of limited mobility due to age, accident or illness. Today, walk-in bathtubs have become mini spas utilized for relaxation and their therapeutic features by household members of all ages, particularly those seeking relief for tired muscles caused by their work or athletic pursuits.

“With the aging of the baby boomer generation, we are routinely installing age-friendly features, including walk-in tubs and showers, in our bathroom remodeling projects,” said Tropical Plumbing & Bath president

Charlie Beeck, a Building Industry Association Remodeler of the Year.

“Walk-in bathtubs and showers generally include such components as head-rests, grab-bars, seats and hand-held showers that can be placed in several positions and have spraying intensities ranging from gentle to massage,” Beeck said. “The tub can be filled so the occupant can be immersed in the water, much like a furo (Japanese bath). The walk-in showers are increasingly popular, and often replace standard tubs or old-fashioned showers. Anyone considering such bathroom upgrades can contact us for an appointment at the home, so we can assess the space and make recommendations.”

Beeck noted that his company recently installed three walk-in bathtubs at the Kuakini Home Residential Care facility for men and women.

A one-stop shop, Tropical Plumbing & Bath provides complete bathroom design packages and services what the company sells. As general contractors, Tropical Plumbing & Bath also provides all the necessary plumbing for the fixtures. The company has been the recipient of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser‘s “Hawaii’s Best” Awards.
