At Homeworks Construction’s December 1 workshop on designing and building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), a variety of plans will be made available to attendees for review and preliminary cost estimates.
ADU specialist Kim Green will host the free workshop and cover all the basics of designing a structure that meets the requirements in terms of allowable size and positioning on an existing property. Loan officer Mark James of Guild Mortgage will provide details on the various ways of financing an ADU.
“We’ve had an amazing response from homeowners who want to add an ADU structure to their property,” said Homeworks President Jim Byxbee. “It demonstrates a real need in the community for these types of units which serve both to house family members on the property, but in separate quarters, and provide an additional source of income with a legal rental. An ADU unit, whether detached or connected to the main house, can also make it possible for families with limited income to stay together and even help alleviate the problem of homelessness.
“Of course, certain guidelines need to be followed, which we explain in the free workshops we’ve been offering since the ADU program was fi rst announced. We already have a number of ADU units of varying styles and sizes underway in neighborhoods throughout Oahu.”
Byxbee noted that after their presentations, the speakers are available for one-onone consultations with workshop attendees, who can also make an appointment to meet later at the Homeworks conference room or at their property.
