HR-080215-Homeworks-Construction-2Homeworks Construction has completed a custom duplex home on the site of a demolished, old plantation home on the Windward Coast, which soon will welcome its Mainland owners for a family vacation. What makes the project unique is the process of design and construction, which was accomplished over a six-month period and without the actual presence of the owner, who resides on the West Coast.

Homeworks project coordinator Kim Green noted that the owner decided to create a family compound on the 15,000-square-foot property that had long been in the family. The property has deeded access to the beach, which is a few hundred yards away.

The home essentially is two self-contained, attached homes — each with two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen and living room, with parking and storage below at ground level. Each of the 836-square-foot units is a mirror image of the other. There is no interior access between the units, which are entered from exterior staircases.

“The owners chose Homeworks to design and build their new home based on a referral from their property management firm,” Green said. “Project manager Heather Hickox and I met with them initially, but the plans were emailed and discussed by telephone and iPhone. The contract was also signed on the Mainland and mailed to us.

“Our team obtained all the permits required and reviewed all the interior details with the client who flew to Hawaii over a weekend to select finishes, such as cabinets, countertops, flooring, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, appliances and paint colors.

“Eventually, the owners came to Hawaii on vacation and were delighted with the project. We look forward to working with them on future projects,” said Green.
