One person who took a methodic approach to solving his home’s recent heat problem was Dr. R. David Dikeman. The Hawaii Kai homeowner frequently was cut off from trade winds, and his vaulted ceilings trapped heat, so even on hot days it always was hotter inside than out.

“I knew there was something I could install to suck the heat out of my house. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., it was almost uninhabitable,” Dikeman said. “I was researching solutions when I came upon Island Cooling’s website. The QuietCool Whole House Fan and eShield-Radiant Barrier was what I was looking for.”

Installed in the attic of the home, the QuietCool system works by drawing heat out of the living space, blowing trapped hot air out of the attic vents and bringing in fresh air from outside. Controlled by a timer on the wall, it uses a fraction of the energy of A/C.

Dikeman purchased his QuietCool STL4.8 and eShield Radiant Barrier earlier this year and has been enjoying it ever since. “It’s changed the quality of my family’s life,” he said. “The system has made it so we are shielded from the heat pressure and get a cooling breeze through the house. Plus, we already are seeing a savings on our electricity bill!”

This system is one of more than 2,000 that has been distributed statewide by Island Cooling LLC, a recent winner of a Hawaii’s Best Award. With its single-minded emphasis on efficient cooling, brothers and certified NAHB Green Professionals Ivan and Al Whitworth help many homeowners who thought that their only choices were between being hot and running full-time air conditioning. “At the end of the day, the QuietCool system matches our island lifestyle,” said Ivan Whitworth.

Another customer, Richard Montano, had a system installed last year in his Kunia home. “As soon as we started using it we saw our HECO bill drop dramatically,” he said. “The service is top-notch. Island Cooling is great, personable and really cares about their customers.”
