When Kaimuki resident Giovanni Sclarandis began his search for a contractor, reputation was key.
The first company that caught his eye was Hua Xia Construction. To Sclarandis, the company’s base price for new home construction seemed too good to be true. He was sure further research would reveal a poor reputation or sub-par craftsmanship, but all he could find were glowing reviews and recommendations.
A short time later, Sclarandis invited Hua Xia project manager Andy Cao and his father Xiang Feng Cao, the company’s founder, to his home in Kaimuki. They discussed a vision for the new home and offered a quote for the project on the spot. Sclarandis was happy with the consultation, but was even more impressed with what followed.
“Other contractors took me to see their projects and would tell me the finish date was the following month, but there was nobody working at the site, and it was a week-day. I was really disappointed. When Andy took me around, he showed me places they had already finished, and one project the crew was actually working on that we went out to see in Hauula.” For Sclarandis, the search for a contractor was over.
Hua Xia Construction’s team then connected Sclarandis with an experienced architect and began on-site demolition early, so that everything was in order for building the moment the permits were approved.
When Sclarandis discovered that an old mango tree on the property was hollow, Hua Xia completely removed the tree at no extra cost, even though the contract originally outlined only necessary trimming. “Most guys would tell me it’s going to cost a couple thousand extra to take down the whole mango tree and haul it away. All I had to pay for was the dump fee to get rid of the green waste,” Sclarandis shared.
When it came to modifications, Cao and his team were patient and flexible. “He’s really good about any changes. Because it’s our fist time building, we changed our minds about a few things,” said Sclarandis. “I kept thinking, ‘When am I going to get the big bill?’ We even started making some changes to the floor plan, and the house grew. He still didn’t ask us for more money.”
“We handle everything from step one,” said Cao. “Moreover, we make sure to include the client every step of the way, exercising active communication and patience, so that the homeowner feels comfortable about everything.”
Nearly as impressive as its integrity was Hua Xia Construction’s speed. “Once they got the permit, it was just amazing how fast they worked. From when they first poured the slab, it’s been five weeks, and they’re priming and painting already. The house will probably be ready in a couple of weeks!” Sclarandis had reported at the time.
Founded in 2006, Hua Xia Construction has since handled over one thousand successful projects across Oahu. Specializing in both commercial and residential construction, Hua Xia can take on any job from updating cabinets to constructing a new home.
“Being relatively new to the Islands, it was crucial for us to establish ourselves with quality craftsmanship and superior customer service,” said Cao. “To this day, the majority of our business continues to come from referrals.” And sure enough, Sclarandis stated, “I would definitely recommend them to any family or friends.”
