Smart tips to remember are to investigate the building contractor and know that all proposed work requires a set of plans and a written scope of work. Any changes to the original scope of work should be written and authorized by both parties with a price associated with the change.

Here are some additional highlights/questions you should contemplate before the launch:

Ask yourself if you prefer a front yard piled with construction rubbish and debris for a full month or two, or a tidy jobsite with a roll-off bin to contain removed debris? Ok then, request that the contractor include your obvious desired expectations in his bid.

Ask if you would prefer all the construction workers using your personal bathroom facility and tracking mud into the house, or a jobsite toilet be placed on the project for the duration of the work? OK then, insist that this facility provision is in the contractor’s proposal so you are not disappointed when work begins. Not all contractors think alike in this regard.

Homes constructed prior to 1978 may contain asbestos in the floor covering materials. Particularly with vinyl floor tiles, the paint may contain hazardous amounts of lead concentrations and the ceiling will contain inorganic arsenic which was incorporated into the materials when fabricated to repel insect intrusion.

Care must be taken with all these materials for proper removal and disposal. It is advisable to only allow the handling of these materials to firms who are trained in their proper removal and disposal. Don’t place your family at risk when disturbing these materials.
