At the moment, Hawaii’s roofing industry is experiencing a remarkable period of growth. Seventy one percent of roofing companies that responded to a Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA-Hawaii) survey reported revenue increases in 2012. Despite a sluggish economy and limited residential development, the demand for “green solutions” has led to a sharp increase and interest in energy-efficient roofing products and solar energy.
Surface Shield Roofing is among the companies committed to providing a full spectrum of roofing services, including solar PV panel installation, maintenance and restoration. The company has been ranked as one of BIA-Hawaii’s Top 10 Roofing Contractors for three years in a row, and was noted in the Top 5 Most Improved in Revenue for 2012.
With the ability to install and service all manner of roofing materials, Surface Shield is now established as one of Hawaii’s premier roofing contractors.
“We enjoyed a great year,” said Surface Shield president and CEO Shon Gregory.
“We experienced an increase in public, commercial and government projects. Additionally, the growing interest in photo-voltaic has led to our commitment to PV installation and maintenance.”
One reason for Surface Shield’s success is its ability to offer a one-stop choice for all your roofing and solar needs. As vice president and partner of United Pacific Builders LLC — a licensed general contractor — Gregory said, “We can offer the full spectrum of contracting services — from the installation of solar or a new roof to the construction of a new home or building, we have you covered!
“We have found this to be the ‘marriage’ people have been looking for, especially regarding solar installation and roofing. We warranty the roof, the solar and the penetrations that are made into the home or building, all under one company.”
The company’s commercial customers include Island institutions like Local Motion, City Mill, Love’s Bakery, Y. Hata & Co., Honda Windward and many more. Surface Shield serviced more than 200 residential customers in 2012, with jobs ranging from minor repairs to roof installations, solar repairs and PV panel installation.
Part of the reason for an increased demand for PV services is the fact that many of Hawaii’s solar systems are in a state of disrepair. Improper installation and a need for maintenance and repairs have led to roof leaks in many homes and buildings. Surface Shield specializes in addressing those concerns.
“We’ve kept abreast of advances in PV technologies, and that makes us able to effectively evaluate our customers’ needs and develop cost-effective and reliable, long-lasting solutions,” said Gregory.
New developments in the solar and roofing industries happen quickly and often, and Surface Shield has been able to adapt to those changes efficiently — and without undue costs to the customer.
When Surface Shield needed to significantly increase its labor force last year, Gregory was keenly aware of the demands of his industry and its potential for sustainable growth.
“The growth of our company is definitely positive, but our vision is for the long-term,” he said. “We want to see growth throughout the industry: This equals jobs for honest, hardworking Americans. We’re doing our very best to make that happen.”
