Recently, the company completed a brand new multi-generational home in Hawaii Kai that features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, living room, dining room and patio downstairs. The upstairs has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a wet bar (with a wine chiller), living room, dining room and den.

The homeowners of this project originally started with the idea of doing a second floor addition over their existing home built in the 1970s. They wanted this addition to be able to accommodate not only their own children but also their newborn grandchildren. S. Tanaka Construction started by creating a sketch of the new addition along with a cost estimate. After looking the sketch over, the owners wondered how the home would look aesthetically having a brand new second floor while the first floor remained in its current 45-year-old state. The homeowners still wanted to continue with the addition, but desired to make the entire home look fluid and from the same era. That now meant renovating the interior and exterior of the existing home. This fluid look was a priority for the owners and a challenge to say the least. From changing plumbing to re-wiring electrics to structural repairs, the costs added up quickly. One of the major reasons for this is that more time goes into working around or with existing material and, in a lot of cases, the existing materials are no longer manufactured.

After numerous discussions with the owners and making adjustments and changes, the company determined the original idea of an addition/renovation would go way over budget, without even achieving all the owners’ wants and needs. S. Tanaka Construction then suggested taking a look at tearing down their home and building a brand new one. Well, as you can see from the photos, you know which route the owners decided to go. S. Tanaka Construction came up with a sketch for a brand new home which included all the amenities the owners needed customized to their lifestyle and aesthetics. They were able to achieve a brand new home within a budget they could afford.
