If you are a homeowner looking to remodel your home, consider going green as one of your remodeling goals. By investing in renewable energy systems and energy-efficient appliances for your home, you’ll save money each month by reducing your utility bills, and this will provide a return on investment that is sure to pay off for years to come.

To help make renewable energy systems affordable, Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) created Reduce Oil Consumption (ROC) loans. With various ROC loan programs available, switching to green products such as solar water heaters, solar photovoltaic systems and fuel-efficient automobiles has never been easier.

One of the most common renewable energy systems in Hawaii homes is the solar hot water heater. By using the sun’s natural energy to heat your water, you can expect a reduction of your electric bill of up to 40 percent. Depending on your hot water usage, you can expect the system to pay for itself within five years. To help with upfront costs for installation, HCFCU has partnered with Hawaii Energy to offer a Solar Water Heater loan promotion. This promotion allows you to work with a qualified solar contractor to finally switch over to a solar water heating system and take advantage of state and federal tax credits.

Another renewable energy system to consider installing in your home is a photovoltaic (PV) system which converts the sun’s energy into useable electricity. PV systems have been growing rapidly in popularity and now with the help of rebate programs and great tax incentives, they have become much more affordable and beneficial for today’s consumers. To help with financing the installation costs, HCFCU offers a Solar Photovoltaic Loan with a special introductory rate for the first six months. With the money saved each month with a lower electricity bill, you’ll be able to recoup the cost of the installation within five to 15 years, depending on the cost of electrical rates.

Installing renewable energy systems and other energy-efficient appliances in your home can be pricey, but it is an investment that is well worth it! To learn more about any of HCFCU’s ROC loan programs, call its Consumer Loan Department at 536-3677.
