Walker-Moody Construction is a specialist in asphalt maintenance. In 2000, the company was asked to restore and seal-coat asphalt as part of a project and, things turned out so well that Lyle Moody decided that asphalt maintenance would provide a steady flow of work for the company.
After testing different products, the company chose MasterSeal — a product of SealMaster.
New equipment was purchased to perfect the process, and the company has since focused on repairs and sealcoating. Today, Walker-Moody Construction serves as an authorized installer of SealMaster Hawaii.
The heart of an effective pavement maintenance program includes periodic sealcoating with an asphalt-based emulsion pavement sealer. Left untreated, asphalt pavement will deteriorate rapidly. It is made up of asphalt binder and rock. Almost immediately after paving, the asphalt binder combines with oxygen and becomes brittle or oxidized, leading to cracking and weathering soon after installation. Moisture penetrates the asphalt, causing further damage and deterioration to the pavement.
Sealcoating protects against oxidation. An unsealed pavement allows water to penetrate the pavement structure, leading to base erosion and ultimately pavement failure. Sealcoating provides a protective barrier to stop water penetration. But if left unsealed, oil and gasoline will soften and deteriorate the exposed asphalt binder. Sealcoating provides a protective barrier that resists attack from oil and gasoline.
