As one of the island’s busiest contractors, Ray Xie of Rui Construction has worked on his share of challenging custom builds and elaborate renovations.

This past year brought Xie a pair of interesting projects, the likes of which he rarely sees — custom construction of two back-to-back Kaimuki homes, owned by a pair of sisters.

“We started with demolition of the existing housing, and built everything from the foundations to the roofing,” explained Jon Xie, son of Ray Xie and manager of Rui Building Supply, the construction fi rm’s sister company. “It took us about eight months to finish, from groundbreaking till the owners moved in.”

Thanks to 20 years of experience and a serious commitment to quality, Xie and his team at Rui Construction completed the enormous project with efficiency and speed. In less than a year, the sisters were handed the keys to their new homes.

Handsome and sturdy, the house in front is a sand-hued villa with chocolate trim, its elegant arched portico flanked by two tall columns. Connected through a garage, the house at the back of the lot features an Italianate balcony with a wrought-iron railing off the main living area with three big windows on either side for terrific natural light.

Inside, the homes are gorgeous – and distinctly different. One boasts solid wood plank flooring in the living area and natural kitchen cabinets in a complementary shade, with a green ceramic tile backsplash. The other house includes a farmhouse-style kitchen with gleaming tile floor and cream-colored cabinetry. Bathrooms in both homes are all fully tiled, with custom touches like tile inserts and quartz cutouts for soap dishes and sills.

“We used a lot of different tile in these two houses, all from Rui Building Supply,” said Xie. “As a one-stop shop, we always give our construction customers discounts on building supplies. We’ll help with design, and we can provide the majority of the interior and exterior fixtures for the house, depending on your drawings.”

As a huge bonus, Rui’s construction team assists clients with pre-estimates, layouts, and designs for new builds and renovations, all free of charge.

“We can even schedule a time to send a contractor to their place to take measurements,” said Xie. “Some customers only have time to see us at night. We’re happy to accommodate them!”
