A Pearl City family needing more space in their 60-year-old home found a solution in a unique Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) addition, a self-contained unit above the garage.

Homeworks Construction sales coordinator Kim Green, who worked closely with the client on the project, said the 800-square-foot structure adds approximately one-third more living space to the home.

“The original home is a three-bedroom, two-bath with a vaulted ceiling,” Green said. “The ADU was placed over the garage area in front with a lanai below adjacent to the garage. The new structure includes two bedrooms, one bath, kitchen, laundry and main living area with a view of Pearl Harbor.

“Structural work included removal of the old carport and construction of a new infrastructure for the garage and ADU, which has its own parking space under one side of the home.

“The option to build an ADU on the 5,600-square-foot property was an opportunity for the family to provide an appealing environment for multigenerational living with privacy and open air views for all major living areas.

“When people think of ADUs, they generally envision the free standing structure variety, the first style of ADU that became popular when this type of construction was first introduced more than three years ago. Homeworks has since designed and built many custom options for homeowners. ADUs are perfect for aging-in-place living, for extended family arrangements or simply for generating rental income.”
