A few weeks ago, we sat down with Shirley Pai Hilton of Kahala Pacific Floors to discuss the important role of beautiful and functional flooring in enhancing your existing home or a new project. Shirley has long been recognized as one of Hawaii’s foremost authorities on flooring and she has a mission to educate the floor-purchasing public.

Just ask anyone who has been to one of her Wood and Stone Flooring 101 seminars and they will tell you that it is well worth 90 minutes of your Saturday morning. Nearly everyone who attended gushed about how informative it was, how well it was presented and how much they learned. We asked the “Wonder Woman of Wood” a few questions about her monthly seminar.

Question: What kinds of flooring do you discuss at the seminar?

Hilton: We really cover a very wide variety of topics. Beginning with solid and engineered wood flooring, we move on to regular and strand bamboo, laminate, luxury vinyl, natural stone, ceramic tile and porcelain tile. The only thing we sell that we don’t cover is carpet due to a lack of time. Also, carpet is usually a “touchy-feely” floor covering and there’s not much to teach about that.

Question: What else do you cover during the seminar?

Hilton: Well, we go into each type of flooring in depth, telling how it is made, how it is finished and giving the pros and cons of each one. We also go into installation methods and what it takes to put each floor in properly. Lastly, we talk about how to finish things off with the appropriate moldings and how to take care of that floor.

Question: What is the main benefit to the consumer from attending the seminar?

Hilton: It is our goal to try and help our customers have a happy ending to their flooring story. The more you know before you buy, the better you can meet your expectations. And most important, all attendees are given a special private sale pricing with their attendance. Whenever they are ready, they receive better than contractor pricing on their choice of flooring and licensed installation.

The next Wood and Stone Flooring 101 session will be held Saturday, July 8 at 10 a.m. Call 847-7711 to reserve your seat today.
