Wood flooring has been around for a very long time, but it has had a strong re-birth and evolution in the last 20 years or so. Selections — once limited to oak, maple and hickory — now has exploded into a Crayola 64-pack of exotic, beautiful choices. Additionally, varying formats, widths, treatments and finishes present an exponential increase of one’s selections.

Most folks start out knowing that they want wood floors for the elegance, longevity and cleanliness. From there, it can go in hundreds of different directions. Should a solid or engineered wood floor be selected? Should wood even be considered or would laminate flooring be better? What about bamboo, or perhaps, strand bamboo? What is luxury vinyl tile, and who is a good source for these products and installation?

Shirley Pai Hilton of Kahala Pacific Floors (KPF) says she is ready, willing and able to answer all those questions for you, and then some. A few thousand of your friends, relatives and neighbors already are graduates of KPF’s Wood and Stone Flooring 101 seminar, and Hilton said that it is one of the most gratifying parts of her job. “So many folks attend the seminar, and when it is done, they are constantly coming up to me to say how much they enjoyed it and how much they learned. I’m teaching a seminar and that tells me that I achieved my goal of educating the consumer!”

Hilton covers a lot in 90 minutes. Topics in flooring types, for example, include pre-finished and unfinished solid and engineered wood, bamboo, strand or compressed bamboo, laminate, vinyl, ceramic and porcelain tile and natural stone. Installation topics include floor prep, moisture issues, proper acclimation, moldings and maintenance.

Here is the best part: Graduates of the seminar are given a private sale pricing on materials and installation, which is its very best pricing (lower than contractor prices) and the only way to get it. You never have to worry that it’s going to go on sale for less at the next trade show.

The next class will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. at its Kalihi showroom. Call 847-7711 to reserve your seat today.
