With the pending merger of Hawaiian Electric and Florida-based NextEra Energy, the future of photovoltaics and other forms of renewable energy are in question. No one quite knows for sure what NextEra’s thoughts and intentions are. Will things remain the same? Will the state of net energy metering (NEM) change? There are many questions that still have no concrete answers. However, one thing that is certain is that there is no better time than now to install your PV system.

What the future holds for net energy metering in Hawaii is unknown. Currently NEM customers are receiving the full benefit of their PV systems, meaning every kilowatt produced is a kilowatt applied to your bill; an eye for an eye, so to speak. That could very well change when the merger does take place. At the moment, HECO customers submitting NEM agreements are being approved, some of them with interconnection fees and some without, depending on the area in which you reside. This is great news for those who are in the market for a PV system. The process may take a little time, but as of now, pending any unforeseen developments, NEM approval is very much a reality.

There are other factors to consider as tax credits also are in jeopardy. With the federal tax credit coming to an end in 2016 and the state tax credit looming, it would be wise to contact a PV contractor now.
