Design-build company still the right choice

“Because we’re a design-build company, we’re very conscientious about the form of what we design and how it functions properly,” said HK senior design consultant Johnny Makiling.

Makiling describes a situation he encountered recently when a homeowner wanted to add an addition to the structure directly above an existing carport. While another builder told the homeowner it was possible to do by simply shoring up existing beams and supports, the experienced team at HK Construction noted that adding another floor above the carport would be dangerous, and may prove disastrous in the event of high winds or a severe storm. To adequately address the extra load created by the addition, Makiling explained that the designers at HK Construction determined that the carport would need to be rebuilt to handle another floor above it. The project ended up costing a bit more than the original estimate, but the job was done safely and the home’s property value increased as a result of the investment.

“Oftentimes, a homeowner has an idea of what they want to do with their home but doesn’t know how to properly execute that concept,” Makiling said. “As builders, we want to perform every project with quality in mind, so everything conforms to the building codes and we can sleep well at night knowing the job was done right.

“Especially when planning an addition, it’s important to utilize a design-build company like HK Construction because you’re invariably going to have a situation where an older structure needs to be re-built properly.”
