Local company spreads holiday cheer
For many, December heralds the biggest holiday season of the year with images of Santa Claus, family gatherings, gift exchanges and singing carolers. But for the team at Graham Builders, it’s also a time to give back to the community through its support of Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation (HCCF), and also by spreading holiday cheer while surprising strangers with cash at the mall!
On Saturday, Dec. 13, Graham Builders will once again hold a Christmas party for the children and families served by HCCF. This is the 15th consecutive year Graham Builders will host and organize the elaborate annual holiday celebration at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
The children and families of HCCF enjoy festive food, presents and entertainment by the Society of Young Magicians. Graham Builders has even arranged a visit from Santa Claus, bearing gifts for each child in the family, including siblings of the cancer patients. In addition to Graham Builders, this year’s party is sponsored in part by local companies including:
• Amano Construction Inc.
• Amazon Construction
• Cabinet Connection
• D&S Electric
• Hawaii Kitchen & Bath
• Home Improvement Systems
• JM Yoshimura Plumbing
• Pang Communications
• Yamagishi Bookkeeping
For the past seven years, Graham Builders has also expanded support of HCCF by raising awareness of childhood cancer at its monthly “Building Your Home for Life” seminars. Attendees are encouraged to donate to HCCF, and every donation is matched by Graham Builders. Through this initiative, the company has raised thousands of dollars for HCCF.
“This is one party that we all look forward to every year,” said Evan Fujimoto, president of Graham Builders. “This event brings much joy and happiness to the children and families of HCCF, and we are more than delighted to be the ones who bring the smiles to their faces.”
Another holiday tradition for the Graham Builders team is handing out envelopes with cash to strangers. In 2010, following the company’s holiday luncheon at Ala Moana Center, Graham Builders CEO Danny Graham gave each employee an envelope with $20 cash, but it was not for them to keep. The employees were tasked with finding a random stranger at the mall and handing the envelope to them.
This year, Graham Builders plans to hand out envelopes ranging from $25 to $100 following the luncheon on Dec. 23, in honor of the company’s 25th Anniversary that it will celebrate in 2015. If you happen to be doing your holiday shopping at Ala Moana Center that day, perhaps you might be one of the lucky twenty people receiving an envelope!
“It’s not really about the dollar amount,” said Graham. “It’s really about showing there are good people in this world who do nice things for others and ask for nothing in return.”
