For the past seven months, Graham Builders, Hawaii’s leading design+build firm, has been hard at work building a brand new multigenerational home for Christin Sumida and her family in Aiea. The family’s journey began earlier this year, when they attended Graham Builders’ free “Building Your Home for Life” seminar, and came across a Building Broker who sparked their interest.

At that time, Christin, her husband and their son were living with her parents in a 70-year-old plantation style home that had belonged to her grandmother. The family had outgrown the single-level, four-bedroom and two-bath house, and knew that in order for them to live comfortably together, they needed to build a new one.

Following their initial meeting with Graham Builders, Christin and her family were confident they wanted to work with Graham Builders, and right away signed an agreement to start design. Construction began in March, when the old house was demolished to make room for the new home. Now, seven months later, Christin and her family have a custom-built, multigenerational home that reflects not only their current lifestyle, but also each family member’s personal character and needs.

“Working with Graham Builders was extremely easy, as they were so helpful every step of the way,” said Christin. “We had several meetings to develop the home’s design and at each one, Graham Builders answered any questions we had. They also made many suggestions as to how to create the ideal living environment for my parents.”

At more than 2,700 square feet, the new two-story multigenerational home can now comfortably fit three generations under one roof. Christin, her husband and son will reside on the top floor, but still share some common living areas, such as the kitchen and living room, with her parents.

The home features five bedrooms and three baths. An open kitchen and living room with vaulted ceilings create a bright and airy atmosphere. To accommodate guests, there is a large driveway and access to a powder room from the backyard, when entertaining outdoors.

“Being that this is my first experience building a home, having a company like Graham Builders to work with takes a lot of the stress off our backs. It’s great to know that you are in good hands. We would definitely recommend Graham Builders to our friends and family,” added Christin.
