Last month, we shared the story of Christin Sumida and her family’s journey in building a new multigenerational home with the help of Graham Builders, Hawaii’s premier design+build company. After Christin’s grandmother passed away, Christin and her family were determined to honor her grandmother’s wish that her home remained within the family.

However, they also knew that for Christin, her husband, her son and her parents to all live comfortably in the house, they would need to tear down the 70-year-old plantation style home in Aiea. That’s when the family turned to Graham Builders for help to design and build their new custom home.

To make room for the family’s new home, the former four-bedroom, two-bath single-level house was razed in mid-March. One week later, the experts at Graham Builders started construction on the family’s new multigenerational home. During the past six months, Christin and her family have been temporarily renting a place across the street.

“Our project manager, Chad Okuhara, has been awesome to work with,” said Sumida. “He would actually stop by at least once a week to check in with my parents, to see if they had any questions or concerns. My family constantly receives updates on the build and are notified of any changes within a timely manner.”

“We are completely satisfied with the work thus far, and are extremely excited to see our new home,” Sumida added.

The family’s new 2,767-square-foot home will be two levels, with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Christin, her husband and son will reside on the upper level, while Christin’s parents will be downstairs. Common areas that the family will share include the open kitchen and living room. The garage can accommodate two cars, while the broad driveway will double as entertainment space.

This story is part two of three that follows Christin and her family in their design+build journey with Graham Builders. The big reveal of the final product will be next month. Don’t miss it!
