Homeworks Construction has been an industry leader for two decades, with hundreds of new custom homes and remodels throughout Oahu in its varied and extensive portfolio. A pioneer of the design/build system, it provides all architectural, planning and construction services “under one roof,” the company slogan. Its projects range from affordable to luxury.

Also contributing to the company’s ongoing growth, is its flexibility in working with clients. “Many of our clients come to us with a clear picture of what they want in their new or remodeled home,” said Homeworks president Jim Byxbee. “Some may even have architectural plans, which was the case with a custom home we recently completed on the slopes of Diamond Head (see cover). The client, whose main residence and business are on the East Coast, provided his plans to our architect Mario Tadeo AIA, who took the project to the next level in terms of permits, design and structural details.”

Byxbee, who handled demolition of a tear-down on the 6,492 square foot property, said the project was particularly challenging due to the slope and density of the neighborhood. “We also needed to make maximum use of the space, to accommodate a 4,884 square foot house and a 622 square foot underground garage, while preserving mature trees and taking advantage of view channels. This client actually became part of our design/build team, with very rewarding results,” Byxbee said.

New custom homes are just part of the Homeworks story. The company has also been designated one of the nation’s Top 500 Residential Remodelers by Qualified Remodeler magazine. It has also been named “Remodeler of the Year” by the Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA-Hawaii) and won numerous awards in the BIA Hawaii Renaissance competition.

Homeworks recently completed an extensive remodel of a 60-year-old Wailupe Circle home, purchased by a couple who were previously residents of Kapolei. “We completely gutted and stripped down this home to conform to the client’s needs and the new exterior and interior design created by our architect Mario Tadeo,” said project coordinator Kim Green.

“The interior was reconfigured and includes a new modern kitchen designed by our Homeworks kitchen designer Sean Bradshaw. We tore down and rebuilt the garage and added a 240 square foot lanai and 60 square foot entry porch to the home’s existing 2,807 square feet. The original siding was concrete brick with single wall construction, which we insulated before adding new board and batten siding. One of the really appealing design features of the home is the roof line. The slope and style of the main roof, which is cedar shingle, has been repeated with the roof of the new attached garage and the portico at the front entrance. This home now has a completely new look and great curb appeal.”
