A roof that’s built to last

A mere three days after graduating from Pearl City High School, Mike Leong went right to work with the ultimate goal of providing local families and business owners with high-quality roofing solutions.

Armed with practical experience and on-the-job training gleaned in part by working for his uncle, a well-respected veteran in the construction and roofing industries, Leong started Kapili Roofing nearly six years ago. He chose Kapili to represent his business, as the native Hawaiian term means “to build, put together,” or “to mend, repair or construct” — the perfect theme for what Leong strives to offer customers.

Since building Kapili Roofing in 2007, Leong has expanded the business from one group of a few employees to four crews composed of 20 skilled workers, while increasing sales 16 fold. As the licensed and bonded business approaches its sixth anniversary in September, Kapili Roofing continues to rely on the invaluable word-of-mouth referrals stemming from satisfied customers who are reassured by Leong’s commitment to building his business for many years to come.

Kapili Roofing handles a variety of projects ranging from residential roof construction, repair, painting and waterproofing, commercial and government jobs, complete roof construction and preventative maintenance. Recently, the company applied a new roof coating on the Schofield Barracks PX department store — a job that demonstrated full well Kapili Roofing’s flexibility and concern for the needs of its customers. The roof needed to be coated in “zones” while Leong’s employees remained aware of staggered shutdown times so the air conditioning system could continue running without affecting customers within the building.

Leong’s business was honored recently by Building Industry Magazine, which placed Kapili Roofing atop its list of Top 5 Most Improved roofing contractors. And, last month, the Hawaii Historic Foundation presented Kapili Roofing with its Historic Preservation Award for delicate restoration work performed on a mural at Fort Shafter. Kapili was also selected by Pacific Business News as one of Hawaii’s Fastest 50 growing small businesses.

When consumers notice leaks, water stains or other signs of roof deterioration, including missing shingles or detached granules, Kapili Roofing is standing by to provide solutions that meet the needs and budgetary ranges of property owners. Leong uses high quality products, including White Lava products among others to waterproof while keeping the structure cool in Hawaii’s tropical climate.

Kapili Roofing has earned the highest Select Shingle Master Credential from CertainTeed, and its employees have been tested and passed to become CertainTeed’s Master Shingle Applicators, the ultimate in roofing construction. This distinction will give Kapili Roofing the ability to offer the 5-Star extended warranty, which includes an unsurpassed 50-year, non-prorated warranty — a significant promise of quality considering that roofs typically last 30 to 40 years. Additionally, the 5-Star coverage also covers a 25-year workmanship warranty, which goes leaps and bounds beyond the usual seven years of coverage offered by most roofing contractors.
