Keeping It ‘Old School’ With Sand-and-Finish Wood Flooring

“I call it ‘old school,’ some things they just can’t duplicate in a factory,” Brenna said of the sand-and-finish process. “A lot of people think that this process is extremely dusty, but the sanding industry has come up with dustless sanding technology, which means we put vacuums on every tool and erect plastic bearers (zip walls) to keep the dust to a fine minimum. We offer extra services the client can purchase, like putting floor protectors on all their furniture to help keep the floor looking new for years, cleaning services and moving services to make your experience stress-free.”
According to Brenna, another popular option is engineered flooring — a system featuring a stabilized core and sliced hard-wood that is laminated to ensure stability and to allow for the use of several installation techniques.
A floating floor system is perfect for a family living in the house during the installation process. As Brenna describes the process, “You place a moisture-resistant padding down and then only glue the seams of the hardwood together. This system is the easiest and fastest.”
With Hawaii’s moist air and humid climate, wood tends to expand and contract depending on the variable conditions. The nail-down installation technique, according to Brenna, “is when we use a special flat nail to countersink it into the tongue side of the flooring, causing a blind nail effect every six to eight inches. This system is perfect for plywood substrates, and allows the floor to freely expand and contract.”
