A revolutionary new photovoltaic panel is now available in Hawaii. Known as CIS thin film, this new generation of all-black panels only recently became available for residential installations in the U.S.

Alternate Energy Inc., one of Hawaii’s most trusted locally and family-owned solar energy companies, is the first company in the nation to offer the panels.

CIS stands for the elements copper, indium and selenium. Alternate Energy’s CIS modules offer a higher performance ratio than crystalline silicon, and are the highest-efficiency thin-film modules available.

What does all this mean for homeowners in Hawaii? More terrific choices — especially for homes that have lots of roof space, but not much south-facing surface area and/or homes in cloudier areas such as the back of valleys.

Darren Furumoto, director of operations for Alternate Energy’s CIS division, recently returned from a product tour in Japan with a tremendous respect for the new technology. “The new CIS panels are less sensitive to the inefficiencies that can affect crystalline modules,” he said. “They offer a higher tolerance to cloud cover and heat, and more consistent power production curve.” While CIS panels cost less per watt generated than other panels, they do require more roof space.

The modules are 100-percent manufactured in Miyazaki, Japan — an area renowned for its attention to detail and high-quality production. They also are cadmiumand lead-free, which means no toxic heavy metals near your home and family.

Darren, who is one of Hawaii’s few NABCEP-certified solar PV installers, invites homeowners to call the new CIS division at 843-8100 to learn more.
