For many years, James Tanaka’s home in Salt Lake has been “family gathering” central. With a dual need to be close to his mother, as well as provide her with privacy, Tanaka and his wife decided to add a separate living and loft area to their home. After meeting with several construction companies, the Tanakas attended Graham Builders’ free monthly “Building Your Home for Life” seminar in February 2010 and selected the locally owned company to build their multi-generation home.

“We just got a sense from the people at Graham Builders that this was a solid team effort, and everyone seemed very knowledgeable in all areas,” said Tanaka. “As you often hear horror stories of contractors not fulfilling their purpose, or costs spiraling out of control, our biggest concern was trust. A sense of trust is what I walked away with.”

“The Tanakas had a clear vision and researched what they wanted done prior to our initial meeting with them,” said Evan Fujimoto, president of Graham Builders. “They were also heavily involved in all aspects of the project from design through construction, which resulted in an amazing contemporary-styled space — something you wouldn’t expect to find tucked away in the back yard.”

With the Tanakas’ desire to provide Mom with her independence while still being in close proximity, Graham Builders designed and built an addition off the existing bedroom — new living area, bath, galley kitchen and a second-story loft that looks down onto all three areas. The construction also included renovating the bedrooms that were not in use for the Tanaka family.

“We got what we envisioned with the finished project,” said James Tanaka.

“As with any project, things will go awry, and fitting the elements together is not a perfect science, thus you need someone that can work through the issues, and remain on the job until the very end. Graham Builders was that company for us. We recommend Graham Builders to everyone, and will use them again for future home construction projects.”
